Why Herringbone Works So Well in Engineered Wood

Herringbone is traditionally a wood pattern, and engineered oak is the ideal material for it in a modern home. To understand why, it helps to consider the multi-layer construction of engineered wood, which gives it far greater stability than solid timber. It handles changes in temperature and humidity with much less movement, which in turn makes it a reliable choice for use with underfloor heating, one of the questions we’re asked most often by homeowners planning a new floor.

The quality engineered boards we supply also carry a substantial hardwood wear layer, meaning the floor can usually be sanded and refinished professionally over the years. Herringbone — Standard and Chevron: What’s the Difference?

Customers often ask about the difference between herringbone and chevron, as the two patterns are closely related but visually distinct.

Herringbone uses rectangular blocks cut at 90 degrees to each other. The ends of the blocks meet the sides of adjacent blocks, thereby creating the classic broken zigzag that gives the pattern its name. It’s the more traditional of the two and suits a wide range of interior styles.

Chevron, on the other hand, uses blocks cut at an angle at both ends, so the points meet precisely in the centre to form a clean, continuous V-shape. The result is a sharper, more graphic pattern that tends to suit contemporary interiors particularly well.

One of our favourite recent herringbone installations was part of a large, multi-room project at a luxury coastal residence in Torquay.

The brief called for a flooring solution that was luxurious and distinctive across the main living spaces, the lounge, dining area and first-floor lounge. As a result, we installed herringbone wood flooring throughout. In addition, to elevate the design further, we added intricate border work with tongues that frame the pattern and give each room a genuinely refined finish.

The result speaks for itself: a warm, characterful floor that anchors the interior and works beautifully with the scale and natural light of a coastal home.
