Floor Grinding & Surface Preparation
Mechanical Surface Preparation & Substrate Profiling Across Devon, Cornwall & Somerset
Flooring Matters now offers a full floor preparation service, backed by a new range of professional floor grinders, mechanical stripping machines and high-powered dust extraction equipment.
It’s a capability most flooring companies simply don’t have. Where a smaller contractor might have to turn a difficult substrate away, or bring in a specialist and manage the handover themselves, we can take it on directly, in-house, alongside our own installation work or as a completely standalone job.
That makes us a useful partner for other flooring contractors, main contractors, builders and developers who need a substrate properly prepared but don’t want the cost or hassle of investing in this kind of equipment themselves. Send the job our way and we’ll leave the floor ready for you or your own team to take over.
We cover Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and beyond, on everything from schools and healthcare settings to commercial units and large construction sites, as well as domestic work.

Coatings and Contaminant Removal: What We Strip and Prepare
Our equipment handles some of the most difficult substrates around, including:
- Old and stubborn floorcoverings
- Carpet, vinyl, LVT and tiles
- Old smoothing compound and latex
- Adhesive and glue residues
- Bitumen and old flooring residues
- Paint and floor coatings
- Anhydrite laitance
- Surface contamination
- Uneven or poorly prepared concrete and screeds

Our Mechanical Surface Preparation & Substrate Profiling Process
Where there’s heavy removal to do, our mechanical stripping equipment clears it first. Our grinding equipment then prepares and profiles the substrate, so it’s ready for the next stage of works. Industrial dust extraction runs throughout the process, keeping airborne dust under control and the working environment as clean as practicable.
We can also come in at an early stage of the project and remove the laitance from pumped anhydrite (calcium sulphate) and cementitious screeds, which assists with the drying process.

Standalone Preparation Services for Contractors, Builders & Developers
This service isn’t limited to Flooring Matters’ own flooring projects. We provide standalone preparation services for main contractors, flooring contractors, builders, developers, facilities teams and private clients, leaving the substrate properly prepared and ready for whatever comes next, whether that’s a new floorcovering, a coating, a screed or another finish entirely.
If you’re a flooring contractor without this equipment on your own books, we can work as your preparation partner rather than a competitor. We come in, deal with the difficult substrate, and hand back a floor that’s ready for your installation, on your timeline.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is mechanical surface preparation?
Mechanical surface preparation uses powered equipment, such as grinders and mechanical strippers, to remove old floorcoverings, coatings, residues and contamination from a floor. It’s a faster, more thorough alternative to hand-scraping, and it leaves a substrate that’s properly ready for what comes next.
What is substrate profiling?
Substrate profiling is the process of grinding a concrete or screed surface to create the right texture and key for a new floorcovering, coating or screed to bond to. A poorly profiled substrate can lead to adhesive failure or an uneven finish, so it’s a step worth getting right.
Can you remove old coatings and contamination as well as floorcoverings?
Yes. Alongside carpet, vinyl, LVT and tiles, our equipment handles coatings and contaminant removal too, including old paint, floor coatings, bitumen, adhesive residues, anhydrite (calcium sulphate) and cementitious screed laitance, and general surface contamination.
Do I need to be having new flooring fitted by you to use this service?
No. We offer standalone preparation services for anyone who needs a floor properly prepared, whether or not we’re installing the new floorcovering. We regularly work for main contractors, builders, developers, facilities teams and other flooring contractors who need the substrate ready for someone else to finish.
We’re a flooring contractor without this equipment. Can we bring you in on a job?
Yes, this is exactly the kind of work we’re set up for. Rather than turning down a job with a difficult substrate, or buying equipment you’ll rarely use, you can bring us in to handle the preparation while you focus on the installation. We work around your programme and hand the floor back ready to go.
How much dust does the process create?
We use industrial dust extraction throughout every job, which keeps airborne dust under control and the working environment as clean as practicable. This matters particularly in occupied buildings, schools and healthcare settings.
What size of job can you take on?
Anything from a single domestic room to thousands of square metres on a major construction project. Get in touch with photos, drawings or project details and we’ll advise on the best approach.
Which areas do you cover?
We’re based in Devon and cover Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and beyond for floor grinding and surface preparation work.
