Subfloor Preparation: Why the Best Floors Start Beneath the Surface
Foundations First – The importance of proper subfloor preparation
A beautiful floor starts long before the first plank, tile, sheet, or roll is fitted. Whether you are choosing luxury vinyl tiles, engineered wood, carpet, natural flooring, or a commercial safety floor, the quality of the finished result depends heavily on what lies beneath it.
At Flooring Matters, subfloor preparation is never an afterthought. It is a key part of our service, helping your new flooring look better, perform properly, and last longer.
Why Subfloor Preparation Matters
No floor is better than the surface it is fitted onto.
If a subfloor is uneven, damp, unstable, or poorly prepared, it can cause problems such as:
- Uneven finishes
- Adhesive failure
- Visible imperfections showing through the flooring
- Movement or premature wear
- Moisture-related damage
- Reduced product lifespan
- Potential warranty issues
Good preparation helps avoid these problems before they start.
What Our Clients Say

Common Subfloors We Prepare
Timber Floorboards
Older timber floors are often uneven, loose, or damaged in places. Before fitting a new floor, we may need to secure loose boards, replace damaged sections, and install floor-grade FSC®-certified plywood to create a smooth, stable base.
This is particularly important for flooring such as LVT, vinyl, carpet, and natural fibre products, where movement or unevenness can affect the final finish.
Concrete Subfloors
Concrete floors are common in both homes and commercial properties. They often require smoothing compounds, primers, moisture testing, or damp-proofing systems before flooring can be installed.
Self-levelling compounds can help create a flatter, smoother surface, improving adhesion and helping the finished floor sit correctly.
Chipboard and Mixed Subfloors
In some properties, especially extensions or renovation projects, we find a mixture of surfaces across the same area. This might include concrete, timber, chipboard, or old flooring residues.
Where surfaces change across a space, we use the correct combination of preparation methods, such as ply sheeting, grinding, priming, and smoothing compounds, to create one suitable surface for the new floor.

The Benefits of Proper Subfloor Preparation
A Better-Looking Finish
A well-prepared subfloor allows the finished flooring to sit flat and look its best. This is especially important with design-led floors such as herringbone LVT, wood flooring, or large open-plan spaces where imperfections can be more noticeable.
Longer-Lasting Flooring
Movement, dips, ridges, and poor adhesion can all shorten the lifespan of your floor. Correct preparation helps protect your investment and reduces the risk of future failure.
Moisture Control
Moisture is one of the biggest causes of flooring problems. Where required, we carry out moisture checks and recommend suitable damp-proofing or preparation systems to help prevent costly issues later on.
Manufacturer Warranty Compliance
Many flooring manufacturers require the subfloor to be prepared in a specific way. By using appropriate, high-performance materials and following manufacturer guidance, we help protect your warranty and ensure your flooring is fitted correctly.
More Sustainable Flooring Choices
Good preparation can help floors last longer, reducing waste and the need for premature replacement. Where possible, we also use FSC®-certified plywood and low-VOC smoothing compounds to support more responsible flooring installations.

When Should Subfloor Issues Be Addressed?
The best time to identify subfloor issues is before you choose your flooring.
A site survey allows us to assess the condition of the existing floor, check for potential problems, and recommend the right preparation system. This helps avoid surprises later and ensures the flooring you choose is suitable for the space.
Subfloor Preparation for Homes and Commercial Projects
We carry out subfloor preparation for both residential and commercial flooring projects across Devon and the South West.
From smoothing compounds and plywood overlays to damp-proof membranes, grinding, priming, and specialist preparation systems, we tailor the approach to the flooring product, the building, and how the space will be used.
