What We Did
Client: Kent’s Cavern Prehistoric Caves
Location: Torquay, Devon
Flooring for One of Devon’s Best-Loved Attractions
We were proud to contribute to the refurbishment of Kent’s Cavern—a UNESCO Global Geopark site and one of South Devon’s top tourist destinations. While we didn’t install flooring inside the caves themselves, we delivered a full flooring solution for the entrance and restaurant areas.
This project required materials that could withstand heavy footfall while complementing the site’s unique atmosphere.
Flooring that works for every space
Stylish, Practical Flooring for Visitor Areas
We installed a carefully selected combination of flooring materials to suit the demands of a busy tourist attraction:
-
Amtico Summer Slate and Dry Stone Cinder LVT for the restaurant and entrance, offering both style and durability
-
Altro Suprema safety flooring for the servery area to ensure slip resistance and hygiene
-
Heavy-duty Heckmondwike barrier matting at key entry points to reduce tracked-in dirt and moisture
Resolving Subfloor Issues Before Installation
Before work began, our inspection revealed significant issues with the existing subfloor. The old self-levelling compound had failed in several areas and had not been primed properly. We also discovered that the underfloor heating system was encapsulated in anhydrite (gypsum) screed, requiring a change in the levelling compound specification.
Because the condition of the existing compound was compromised, we brought in a specialist grinding company. They removed all of the faulty material to ensure a clean, strong base for our flooring system.
Expert Solutions in Tourist Attraction Flooring
Working in public visitor spaces comes with its own challenges. At Kent’s Cavern, we delivered a high-performance flooring solution built for longevity, style, and daily wear and tear. This project is another example of our expertise in tourist attraction flooring, ensuring public-facing environments are both safe and visually impressive.
