Why We Choose to Use Our Own Employed Fitters
Why We Choose to Use Our Own Employed Fitters (And Why That Matters to You)
When you’re investing in new flooring, the quality of the installation matters just as much as the product itself. At Flooring Matters, we’ve made a very deliberate decision over the years: we predominantly use our own employed fitters, rather than relying on whoever happens to be available on the day.
It’s a choice that shapes how we work, how we’re perceived, and ultimately the results our customers receive.
We’ll Be Honest, We’re Probably Not the Cheapest on Fitting
We’re always upfront about this.
Our fitting costs are often higher than those of smaller operators or sole traders.
There are a few reasons for this.
Firstly, we are VAT registered, which automatically makes our pricing higher than a non-VAT-registered sole trader. That’s the reality of operating as an established, professional business, and it reflects our scale, compliance and long-term commitment.
Secondly, if we were to send different subcontractors to each job, we would lose a level of control. Control over standards, reliability and consistency. If the job isn’t done well, or if someone lets us down at the last minute, it isn’t their reputation that suffers, it’s ours.
As Andy Law, Director of Flooring Matters, explains:
“We will on occasions be more expensive on the fitting side, partly because we’re VAT registered, but mainly because we choose to employ, invest in and train our own team. If we just sent the occasional subcontractor out to fit a job, we’d be risking our reputation. We don’t have the same controls, and if someone doesn’t turn up or the work isn’t up to standard, that reflects on us. That’s not a risk I’m prepared to take.”
Consistency, Accountability and Pride in the Job
Our employed floorlayers work to the same standards, every single day. They understand our expectations, our systems and our values. They know that the job isn’t finished until it’s finished properly.
Because they are part of our team:
-
We know exactly who is coming into your property
-
We know their experience and capability
-
We know the work will be completed as agreed
-
And if something isn’t right, we take responsibility and put it right
That level of accountability simply isn’t possible when work is handed out to whoever is available.
Qualified, Experienced and Properly Trained
We don’t just employ floorlayers, we invest in them.
Our fitting team are qualified to at least NVQ Level 2, with years of hands-on experience across residential, commercial and specialist flooring projects. Training doesn’t stop once someone is qualified.
Our floorlayers regularly attend:
-
Industry training through providers such as FITA, FloorSkills and Beach Bros Academy
-
Manufacturer training and accreditations with brands such as Karndean, Bona and Bostik
-
Asbestos awareness, first aid, and health and safety courses
-
Regular monthly toolbox talks
This ongoing training supports continuous improvement, keeps our team aligned with best practice, and ensures manufacturer specifications and warranties are fully met.
Nurturing Talent From Within
We’re particularly proud of the fact that we grow our own talent.
Over the years, we’ve brought multiple apprentices through the business, supporting them from the very start of their careers into skilled, confident floorlayers. This approach builds loyalty, pride and a genuine connection to the quality of work delivered.
It also means knowledge and standards stay within the business, rather than walking out the door.
A Which? Trusted Trader, For a Reason
Being a Which? Trusted Traders is not something we take lightly. It reflects not only the quality of our workmanship, but the way we operate as a business, transparently, responsibly and professionally.
We’ve been established since 2016, and we’re very much here to stay. We are not cowboys, not a short-term operation, and not a business that disappears once the job is finished.
That stability is why we can confidently offer a 5-year fitting warranty on our workmanship, and why our customers can trust that we’ll still be here if they ever need us.
A Local Independent Business With Family Values
At its heart, Flooring Matters is a local independent business. Many of our team have been with us for years. We know each other well, support one another, and take pride in the work we put our name to.
That family feel isn’t a marketing line, it’s how we operate day to day. And it shows in the finished floors we leave behind.
The Bottom Line
We choose to use employed fitters because it:
-
Protects our reputation
-
Ensures consistent quality
-
Reduces risk and disruption for our customers
-
Allows us to continually improve
-
Supports a long-term, accountable business you can trust
We may not be the cheapest option, but we believe we are a safe, professional and reliable one.
And when it comes to something you’ll live or work on every day, that difference really matters.
A Small Note on Subcontractors
While we predominantly use our own employed fitting team, there are occasions where we work with a small number of highly trusted subcontract floorlayers to help meet the needs of the business.
These subcontractors are time-served, fully qualified professionals who we have worked with for many years. They are carefully selected, work to our standards, and follow the same expectations around quality, professionalism and customer care as our employed team.
