Traditionally, in areas such as washrooms, toilets and kitchens, tiles are used to protect walls. Yet this approach can cause more harm than good as grout can be difficult to clean – and bleach actually damages grout. Gaps between tiles harbour bacteria, especially if the grout shrinks or the tiles crack.
Flooring Matters can provide you with a much more hygienic solution by fitting Altro Whiterock. A smooth, non-porous, easy-to-clean wall cladding, Altro Whiterock comes in sheets that provide seamless coverage from floor to ceiling. As the panels can be heat formed and bent around corners and installed obstacles like pipes, this eliminates the threat of bacteria hiding in the cracks and gaps that you’d usually get with traditional wall coverings.

- Otterton Mill, Devon – After a fire, the old building was totally refurbished. For this project we installed 145m² of Altro Whiterock installation including cladding to window reveals and the creation of sills. A technically demanding project requiring precise detailing throughout.
- The Yacht, Torquay – A full commercial refurbishment of this landmark harbourside venue, including Altro Stronghold safety flooring installed cap-and-coved in the kitchen areas — creating a seamless, hygienic junction between floor and wall. This project has been shortlisted for a national industry award.
- Broadclyst Primary School, Devon – Hygienic wall cladding to school toilet facilities, meeting the demanding hygiene and durability requirements of a busy educational environment.

Create a Hygienic Seamless Joint between floor and wall
Altro Whiterock is designed to integrate with Altro flooring using a seamless, watertight joint. However, Flooring Matters can fit cladding in conjunction with any non-slip flooring that has been coved up the walls. The coved flooring (also known as coved skirting) stops dirt from getting trapped in corners, as it is curved. Wall cladding can either overlap existing or new vinyl flooring, or be finished with the Altro base trim, covering the join between the flooring and the cladding.

Altro Whiterock semi-rigid extruded PVCu wall sheet can be used in hygienic environments and areas subject to wet usage, and is suitable for both new build and refurbishment projects.
If you are looking to refit a commercial kitchen, bathroom or wet room, Flooring Matters can often fit Altro over existing tiles, block and brickwork, as long as the surface is smooth, sound, dry and free of contamination.
All sheets are supplied with a protective film on the face which can be left in place until the area is ready for use, protecting the new surface from dust while other trades are working. Once all cladding has been installed, the protective film is removed.

Can you fit Altro Whiterock over existing tiles?
In many cases, yes. Altro Whiterock can be fitted directly over existing tiles, block and brickwork, provided the surface is smooth, sound, dry and free of contamination. We’ll assess this during our initial survey.
Do you supply as well as fit?
Yes. Flooring Matters SW Ltd supplies and installs the full Altro Whiterock range, including White, Satins, Chameleon, Digiclad and Splashbacks. We can advise on which product is most appropriate for your specific environment and usage.
Can you take on wall cladding as a standalone project?
Absolutely. While we frequently supply and install wall cladding alongside flooring, our in-house specialist fitter means we can also take on dedicated cladding-only projects.
Can you work around other trades on site?
Yes. We’re experienced in working within busy commercial environments alongside other contractors. Altro Whiterock sheets are supplied with a protective face film that can be left in place while other trades continue working, protecting the finished surface until the area is ready for use.
How long does installation take?
This depends on the size and complexity of the project. We’ll provide a clear programme as part of your quotation. For larger or more complex installations — such as cladding to window reveals, sills, or areas with significant pipework — we’ll factor in the necessary time to ensure a high-quality, fully compliant finish.
