We at Flooring Matters are thrilled to share the incredible success we had at the Contract Flooring Journal Awards, held at the prestigious Dallas Burston Polo Club in Warwickshire on Friday, September 6. It was an unforgettable event that garnered widespread acclaim, (we describe it as the Oscars of the Flooring Industry!) and we’re proud to say it was a momentous day for our team. Expertly hosted by the renowned comedian Hal Cruttenden, the day celebrated the best in the contract flooring industry, and we were honoured to be part of it.

The day was filled with laughter, recognition, and celebration, making this year’s awards one of the most memorable yet. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with industry leaders and highlight the achievements within the sector.

We are proud to say that the spotlight shone brightly on us, and we were thrilled to take centre stage. Partnering with industry leaders such as Altro, IVC Commercial, Genesis Global Systems, Tremco, and TLC by Mercado, we were proud to win the prestigious Flooring in Bars & Restaurants Award for our exceptional work at VIVA Bar Torquay.

But the success didn’t stop there. We were honoured to secure the coveted Installation of the Year Award, solidifying our place as leaders in the field.

To cap off our triumphant day, we also took home the Sustainability Initiative of the Year Award, a testament to our commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility.

At the time of the event, Flooring Matters SW Ltd Director, Andy Law, was unable to attend as he was participating in the Transalpine Run – a trail-running event across the Alps! However, Commercial Manager, Charles Mitchell, along with the admin team, proudly collected the awards and celebrated this incredible achievement.

This recognition means the world to us, and we’re excited to continue pushing the boundaries of excellence in flooring.

CFJ/CFA Award 2024 for Flooring in Bars, Cafes & Restaurants and Installation of the year

We’ve had the pleasure of working with the East Street Pub Company on several projects, but VIVA was undoubtedly the biggest and most exciting one yet! Located right on the picturesque Torquay Harbour, VIVA has a rich history as both a former fish & chip shop and a well-known nightclub at the heart of the local community. Our client envisioned an extraordinary transformation of VIVA into a destination that would appeal to locals and tourists alike, blending modern design with subtle nods to its past.

The project was no small feat. The new owners aimed to convert the building into a bustling Street Food Restaurant on the ground floor, offering a dynamic culinary experience, while turning the upper floors into a lively Games Zone. This vision called for more than just aesthetic appeal—it required flooring that would endure the daily hustle and bustle of a busy restaurant and entertainment venue.

Our challenge was to deliver a solution that was not only visually stunning but could also stand up to the rigorous demands of a high-traffic commercial environment. The flooring needed to balance durability with modern style, ensuring that it could handle everything from heavy foot traffic to spills, while maintaining the sleek and inviting look essential for the overall vibe of the space.

Viva’s transformation into a vibrant, multi-functional venue has completely revitalized the once weathered structure, offering visitors a place to eat, drink, and play—all with a view of the stunning Torquay Harbour. We’re proud to have been part of this incredible metamorphosis, delivering high-performance flooring that complements the venue’s innovative design and diverse functions.

CFJ/CFA Award 2024 for Sustainability initiative of the year

The transformation of Viva Restaurant, Bar, and Games Zone in Torquay was a project that embraced sustainability from the ground up. Key decisions, such as retaining the existing subfloor and opting for adhesive-free floor coverings, played a crucial role in minimizing the environmental impact. By keeping the subfloor intact, the project reduced waste, conserved resources, and avoided unnecessary material extraction and production. This approach not only minimized waste but also helped preserve natural resources that would have otherwise been used for new subfloor materials.

Additionally, the use of adhesive-free floor coverings and water-based adhesives significantly reduced the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), promoting better indoor air quality. These choices supported the creation of a healthier environment for both workers and future occupants, aligning with sustainability best practices. The installation process also became quicker and more efficient, saving energy and reducing the overall carbon footprint of the project.

The selection of durable, recyclable materials, such as the Altro XpressLay and IVC XtraFloor Flex Pro underlay, further enhanced the sustainability of the project. These materials not only contributed to long-term sustainability by extending the lifecycle of the floors but also facilitated recycling at the end of their life, showcasing a commitment to responsible and eco-conscious design.

We were very particular with our vision for VIVA which had lots of different elements to it, being setout over four floors, all with a different aspect!
